Toronto needs change that you can bring! Have you ever considered becoming a part of a movement to bring change to a community that holds your heart? And how often do you wonder how you may touch the lives of the people in your community in a way that makes a gift of a lifetime? Here are some facts about Toronto:
- In the Greater Toronto Area alone, we are facing the challenge of increase in numbers of high poverty neighbourhoods.1
- 1 in 4 Toronto families are struggling in poverty.2
- There has been a profound shift in the resident profile of higher poverty neighborhoods, with "poor" visible minority and immigrant families making up far larger percentages of the total "poor" family population in these neighborhoods today, than twenty years ago.3
- The GTA is now the child poverty capital of Ontario: 50% of Ontario's children in poverty now live in the GTA.4
- Child poverty is racialized. Today the GTA has about 80% of Ontario's immigrants and visible minorities. Children of non-European heritage have made up about one half of the area's children, and seven out of ten of the area's children in poverty (2000).5
Contributing to the relief and reduction of poverty saves lives: infants going hungry because of insufficient family resources or parental education; youths who have no home to turn to; and families or adults enduring rough patches in life. One may be surprised by stories of changes that one person could bring, changes that can lift countless people to their feet to live with dignity, hope, and in wholeness of health.
